A homeowner fills out a form on a comparison site at 2:14 PM.

By 3:14 PM, five companies have called.

The first goes to voicemail.

The second is short.

The third asks the same questions as the second.

By the fifth, the homeowner is annoyed.


The form was filled out once.

The lead was sold five times.

The homeowner did not enter a bidding war.

The bidding war happened anyway.


What the operator sees is a lead that did not answer.

Or answered cold.

Or said they were already talking to someone else.

The set rate looks low for the source.

The cost per lead looks high.

The reading lands on the vendor.


The product was delivered exactly as designed.

A form fill, transmitted within minutes, to operators in the same zip code, against the same vertical, at the same price tier.

That is the product.

The product is the auction.


What the lead fee buys is the right to call.

It does not buy the customer's attention.

It does not buy the customer's patience.

It does not buy the calendar slot the customer will give to whoever called first.

Those were already spent before the operator dialed.
